Why Wilderness? Because it Works!

The anger and defiance. The bad grades (and the even worse attitude). And, lately, even signs of experimenting with alcohol or other drugs.

Your child is headed down a bad path, and you’re at wit’s end about how to set things right again. No matter how hard you try, nothing seems to work.

Wilderness works.

Several studies have documented the degree to which therapeutic wilderness programs can help teenagers make lasting positive changes in their attitudes, behaviors, and decisions. For more than a decade, SUWS of the Carolinas has helped thousands of adolescents and teens make these types of changes, and get back on the path toward a successful and productive future.

Who We Help

SUWS of the Carolinas helps adolescents and teenagers (ages 10 to 17) who have been exhibiting a range of self-defeating behaviors (see box below for examples of common issues among our students).

Our students are organized into two age-appropriate programs – SUWS Seasons for ages 10 to 13, and our teen program for ages 14 to 17. Every step of the way, we work to ensure that every student receives the type and level of care that will best meet his or her specific needs.

How We Help

At SUWS of the Carolinas, students progress through a sophisticated level system designed to assist them in mastering age-appropriate developmental goals.

The wilderness setting functions as the catalyst that allows us to connect with students. Our program moves children out of their “emotional comfort zones” and places them in new and challenging (yet always safe and supportive) environments. Every step of the way, our students are guided, supervised, and encouraged by experienced therapists and counselors who employ a range of effective therapeutic methods.

Students are expertly guided through our experiential and hands-on curriculum, which allows them to discover their inner strengths while increasing their self-awareness and self-esteem.

Keeping Families Connected

At SUWS of the Carolinas, we recognize and value the importance of parental involvement throughout a student’s time with us.

All parents participate in weekly phone calls with their child’s therapist, and regularly exchange letters with their child. Parents also have 24/7 access to our Parent Check-In website, which keeps them current on their child’s progress via photos and other updates.

In addition to a participating in a two-day parent workshop held at the mid-point of your child’s stay, you will also attend a one-day graduation seminar to prepare for a successful reunion with your child and positive transition into the next phase of your child’s continuing care plan.

Safety and Security

At SUWS of the Carolinas, nothing is more important than the safety of our students. From the moment your child at our program, he or she will be under the close supervision of dedicated professionals who have been trained to meet the highest safety standards.

Among our many safety-related practices, students receive regular health checks and all necessary gear to ensure health and safety. Also, our wilderness instructors are in regular contact with our base of operations via multiple means of communication.

We understand that enrolling your child in a therapeutic wilderness program is not always an easy decision. But when you entrust your child to SUWS of the Carolinas, you may do so secure in the knowledge that student safety will always be our top priority.
